CIE AS and A Level (9990)

Assessment for Cambridge International Examinations 2024 onwards

Course Content

Our online resources will support the course content for both AS level and A level following the Cambridge International Examinations specification. 


At AS level students sit two exams both worth 50% of the grade (60 marks each); Approaches, Issues and Debates; and Research Methods. 


To qualify for A Level students sit two additional papers based on two out of four options; Specialist Options in Approaches, Issues and Debates and Specialist Options in Application and Research Methods (60 marks each).

How is it Assessed?

For CIE AS and A Level Psychology, students: 

(i) take Papers 1 and 2 only (for the CIE AS Level qualification) 

or 

(ii) follow a staged assessment route by taking Papers 1 and 2 (for CIE AS Level  qualification) in one examination series, then Papers 3 and 4 (for the CIE A Level  qualification) in a later examination series 

or 

(iii) take Papers 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the same examination series, leading to the full CIE  A Level. 

Course Outline

At AS level students will study 12 core studies across four different areas of Psychology, including Research Methods.


At A Level students will study two out of four specialist options.  The specialist options build on the work from AS and explore how Psychology can be applied in a range of contexts. 


Both include issues and debates. 

Biological

  • Dement and Kleitman (sleep and dreams) 
  • Hassett et al (monkey toy preference)
  • Holzel et al (mindfulness and brain scans)

Cognitive

  • Andrade (doodling) 
  • Baron-Cohen et al (eyes test) 
  • Pozzulo et al (line-ups)

Learning

  • Bandura et al (aggression) 
  • Fagen et al (elephant learning)
  • Saavedra and Silverman (button phobia)

Social

  • Milgram (obedience)
  • Perry et al (personal space)
  • Piliavin et al (subway Samaritans)

Specialist Options

The specialist options build on the work for AS and explore how Psychology can be applied in a range of  contexts. Students are required to study how Psychology is applied in two of the following four areas:  Clinical Psychology, Consumer Behaviour, Health Psychology and Organisational Psychology.
